  • Don't use a passport that has been lost or stolen without reporting it first.
  • Don't take photographs that do not meet the size or quality requirements outlined in the guidelines.

Common mistakes

  1. Incorrect Passport Eligibility: Applicants often fail to verify that their existing passport meets the necessary criteria. The passport must have been valid for at least two years when issued, issued after July 1, 2000, and in the applicant's current name, date of birth, and sex.

  2. Missing Appointment: Many individuals neglect to make an appointment when required. Only certain applicants should lodge their forms at a Passport Office in Australia, and appointments are essential for those who need to do so.

  3. Improper Photograph Submission: Submitting photographs that do not meet the specified requirements is common. Photos must be recent, of good quality, and adhere to strict size and background guidelines.

  4. Failure to Provide Existing Passport: Applicants often forget to include their current passport with the application. The passport number must match the number printed on the form.

  5. Incorrect Payment Method: Using an unacceptable payment method can delay the application. In Australia, preferred payment methods include EFTPOS, Mastercard, Visa, or cash, while cheques are not accepted.

  6. Ignoring Lost or Stolen Passport Protocol: Individuals sometimes overlook the necessity of reporting lost or stolen passports immediately. This is crucial to prevent identity theft and other illegal activities.
